EXPERIENCING GOD IN TIMES OF CORONA
The coronavirus crisis has changed the world forever. We are confronted with an invisible enemy that not only threatens and restricts our lives, but also our lifestyle. This development is thought-provoking and changes our view of the world: What is still to come for humanity? Who controls it all? Is there a reliable personality in our uncertainty that is greater than all control systems, influencing factors and statistics? Perhaps a higher power that has everything in its hands?
The tricky thing about an invisible enemy is that it is not really tangible. Viruses are intracellular parasites that introduce their own DNA and use the existing structures of their host cell to multiply. This only became visible to scientists under the electron microscope.
In rare moments, we sense that there must be an invisible reality in addition to the visible one that goes beyond our horizon. An invisible threat can also have very real effects on us. Wouldn't it be both fatal and an infinite pity to reject an invisible reality simply because we lack the perception for it?
As the author of the Bible, God clearly reveals that a battle is taking place in the invisible reality between »love and hate«, »life and death«, »good and evil«. More than 2,500 years ago, God already announced the historical developments of how the dominion over people's thinking would come to a head. On the spiritual level, there are also invisible attackers who want to insert their DNA into the centre of our personality without us noticing. However, there is also an »invisible friend« who is stronger than any threat and who exposes the sophisticated intrigues of the evil one. We can only face the enemy and survive if we trust God as our personal friend and crisis manager. In practical terms, this means listening, following his advice and making room for his influence.
The Bible tells of an incident involving the people of Israel during their wandering in the desert, when many were attacked by poisonous snakes. People died en masse. Fear and panic spread. The call for a cure became loud. God instructed the leader Moses to make a bronze snake and hang it on a pole. Anyone who was bitten only had to look at this bronze snake to be healed. We still recognise this image of the snake from the staff of Asclepius, the symbol of the pharmacy for the medical and pharmaceutical profession. Back then, it was a sign of faith - not a magical remedy or mascot, but the conviction that God was able to help in this crisis situation.
The coronavirus has not only largely paralysed the world, but has also severely shaken humanity's basic trust and very existence. For many, this time is a psychological burden filled with fears, uncertainty, restrictions and worries. But there is also something left: a chance to deal with something that has been neglected so far. An opportunity for spiritual reflection on the Word of God. Because even today we can claim healing for our souls - in a very personal relationship with God. As an »invisible friend«, he literally wants to carry us through all circumstances. Faith is not just a straw in the wind, but a constant life of hope. It is finally time to perceive life and faith differently and more intensively.

Once again, it becomes clear how fragile one's own existence can be and this realisation triggers a »personal crisis« for many.
