Carved in stone

Thousands of years ago, God wrote his law on tablets of stone and still expects you to observe it today. Transgressing any part of God's law always has unfavourable consequences. It is also necessary to observe the laws of the land to ensure peace and security as our cities are threatened by increasing crime. This principle is also applicable to our lives when it comes to God's law, the Ten Commandments. They are not called the ten suggestions, nor are they called the ten recommendations or the ten greatest ideas. The stakes are very high, so take a few minutes to seriously consider your responsibilities in this regard.

1. did God actually write the Ten Commandments himself?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q1 Tencomm Writing “And when he had finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone inscribed with the finger of God.” “And the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.” Exodus 31:18; 32:16

Answer: Yes, the great God of heaven wrote the Ten Commandments on the tablets of stone with his own finger.

2 What is God's definition of sin?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q2 Tencomm Rockwall “Everyone who commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” 1 John 3:4

Answer: Transgressing God's Ten Commandments is sin. And because the law of God is perfect (Psalms 19:7), it applies to every imaginable sin. It is impossible to commit a sin that is not condemned by at least one of God's Ten Commandments. The commandments contain the “sum total of all doctrine” concerning man's duty. Ecclesiastes 12:13

3 Why did God give us the Ten Commandments?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q3 Mapman “My son, do not forget my teaching and keep my commandments in your heart! For they will prolong your days and years and bring you much peace.” Proverbs 3:1.2

Answer: A. As a guide to a happy, fulfilled life. God created us to enjoy happiness, peace, a long life, contentment, fulfilment and all the other blessings our hearts long for. God's law is the guide to true, supreme happiness.

“Through the law comes knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20 ”But I would not have known sin except through the law, for I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ”Do not covet. Romans 7:7

Answer: B. To show me the difference between right and wrong. God's law is like a mirror (James 1:23-25). It shows my wrong actions as in a mirror that lets me recognise my dirty face. The only way to know if you are sinning is to carefully examine your life in the mirror of God's law. There is hope for this degenerate generation in God's Ten Commandment law. It shows us where to draw the line!

“And the LORD has commanded us to keep all these statutes, that we may fear the LORD our God, and that it may go well with us always, and that he may preserve us alive, as it is this day.” Deuteronomy 6:24 “Strengthen me, and I will always follow your instructions. You will reject all who deviate from your instructions, for their deceit is in vain.” Psalms 119:117.118

Answer: C. To protect myself from danger and tragedy. God's law is like a strong enclosure in a zoo that protects us from wild, threatening animals. It protects us from amorality, falsehood, murder, idolatry, thievery and many other evils that destroy life, peace and happiness. All good laws are given for our protection, and God's law is no exception.

Special note: God, our Creator, has imprinted the eternal principles of his law deep within the nature of every human being. The writing may have faded, but it is still there. This means that you will not find true peace unless you become willing to live in accordance with your inner nature, which is characterised by these principles of God. We were created to live in accordance with God's will. Failure to do so always results in tension, unrest and tragedy. It is the same with disobeying the traffic laws.

4 Why is God's law so extremely important to me?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q4 Pen Quill Greenfeather “Speak and act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty!” James 2:12

Answer: Because the Ten Commandment Law is the standard by which God will judge people in the heavenly judgement. How do you stand before him? It's a matter of life or death!

(5) Can God's law (the Ten Commandments) ever be changed or cancelled?

“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of the law to fall.” Luke 16:17 “I will not make my covenant void, nor change the things that have passed my lips.” Psalms 89:35 “The works of his hands are truth and justice; all his decrees are unchanging, established forever and ever, executed in faithfulness and uprightness.” Psalms 111:7.8

Answer: Not at all! The Bible speaks clearly on this point. If the law could have been changed, then God would have made this change immediately when Adam and Eve fell into sin, instead of allowing his Son to come into this world to die in the sinner's place and take the consequences of transgressing the law upon himself. However, this was impossible because the commandments are not laws in the sense of rules that were introduced. They are the revelation of the holy character of God, which is and remains the same.

Notice the comparison below, where God's law and His nature show the same character traits. Do you recognise what this means? The Ten Commandment law shows God's character in written form - written down for us to understand. It is no more possible to change God's law than it is to push him out of heaven. Jesus came to illustrate to us what the law (the pattern for holy living) looks like when it is lived out in human form. Just as God's character is unchanging, His law is unchanging because it is a description of His character in humanly understandable language.

6 Did Jesus abolish God's law when he was here on earth?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q6 Magnify Tencomm Cross “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish, but to fulfil! For truly I say to you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter nor one stroke of the law will pass away until all is fulfilled.” Matthew 5:17.18

Answer: No, really not! Jesus claimed that he had not come to abolish the law, but to fulfil (keep) it. Instead of abolishing the law, he made it great (Isaiah 42:21) and declared it to be the sure guide to a life pleasing to God. For example, when Jesus says “thou shalt not kill”, he also condemns gratuitous anger (Matthew 5:21, 22) and hatred (1 John 3:15). And he already calls coveting adultery (Matthew 5:27, 28). He says: “If you love me, keep my commandments.” John 14:15

7. will people be saved who knowingly continue to transgress even one of God's commandments?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q7 Bike Chain “For the wages of sin is death.” Romans 6:23 “... to destroy sinners out of it.” Isaiah 13:9 “For whoever keeps the whole law, but falls short in one, has become guilty in all.” James 2:10.

Answer: No, they will be lost. The Ten Commandment Law is the signpost that we must use to find our way to God and to a sanctified life. If I fail to observe even one of the commandments, then I am missing out on part of the divine plan. If even a single link in a chain is broken, the whole thing is useless. The Bible says that it is sin if we knowingly transgress any of God's commandments (James 4:17), because by doing so we are rejecting His will for us. Only those who do his will will have a place in the kingdom of God. Sinners will be lost.

8 Can one be redeemed by keeping the law?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q8 Mirror Dirtyface “... because by works of the law no flesh can be justified in his sight.” Romans 3:20 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9

Answer: No! The answer is unmistakable. No one is saved by keeping the law. Salvation is an exclusive gift of grace from Jesus Christ and can only be received by faith, not by works. The law merely serves as a mirror to show us sin. Cleansing and forgiveness of sin comes through Christ alone.

9 Why then is the law so important for the development of Christian character?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q9 Boy Measureheight “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is what makes the whole man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 “...for through the law comes knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20.

Answer: Because the entire plan, or the “main sum of all teaching” for a Christian life is contained in God's law. Our own standards are unreliable. I do not recognise myself as a sinner unless I look carefully at myself in God's perfect mirror, His law. Millions who have cast out devils, prophesied and done many notable deeds in the name of Jesus will perish (Matthew 7:21-23) because they did not think it was necessary to align their lives with God's standard. They think they are righteous and saved, but in reality they are sinful and lost. “And by this we know that we have recognised him, if we keep his commandments.” 1 John 2:3

10 What enables a truly converted Christian to obey God's law?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q10 Woman Withheart “I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts.” Hebrews 8:10 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me, even Christ.” Philippians 4:13 “...God did this by sending his Son... so that the righteousness required by the law might be fulfilled in us.” Romans 8:3.4

Answer: Christ not only forgives repentant sinners, but also restores the image of God in them. He brings them into conformity with his law through his indwelling presence. “Thou shalt not” then becomes a promise that the Christian will not steal, lie, murder, etc., because Jesus dwells in him and has dominion. God could not change his law, but through Jesus he made provision to change the sinner so that he can fulfil this law.

11 Is a believing Christian who lives under grace not exempt from keeping the law?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q11 Pardon Gavel

“For sin shall not have dominion over you, because you are not under law, but under grace. How then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? Be far from it! Romans 6:14.15. “Do we then abolish the law through faith? Far be it from us! Rather, we confirm the law.” Romans 3:31

Answer: No! Scripture teaches exactly the opposite. Grace can be compared to the governor's remission of a prisoner. He is granted forgiveness, but not the freedom to violate a single state law. The pardoned person who lives under grace is doubly obliged to keep the law. Whoever says that he lives under grace and refuses to keep God's commandments is in error. He lives under disfavour.

12 Are the Ten Commandments of God confirmed in the New Testament?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q12 10Comm Bibleopen

Answer: Yes, quite clearly. Please note the following very carefully.

GOD'S LAW IN THE NEW TESTAMENT GOD'S LAW IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
1 “You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only! Matthew 4:10 1 “You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3
2 “Children, beware of idols!” 1 John 5:21 “Therefore, since we are of the divine race, we must not think that the Godhead is like gold or silver or stone, a product of human art and invention.” Acts 17:29 2 “You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness, either of what is in heaven above or on earth beneath or of what is in the waters under the earth. Do not worship them or serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing mercy to many thousands who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:4-6
3 “...lest the name of God and the doctrine be blasphemed.” 1 Timothy 6:1 3 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes his name in vain.” Exodus 20:7
4 “... for he spoke in one place about the seventh [day] thus: »And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.“ “There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for he who has entered his rest rests from his own works, just as God rests from his” Hebrews 4:4.9.10 4 “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God; you shall do no work there, neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who lives within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8.11
5 “Honour thy father and thy mother.” Matthew 19:19 5 “You shall honour your father and your mother, that you may live long in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:12
6 “Thou shalt not kill.” Romans 13:9 6 “You shall not kill.” Exodus 20:13
7 “You shall not commit adultery.” Matthew 19:18 7 “You shall not commit adultery.” Exodus 20:14
8 “Thou shalt not steal.” Romans 13:9 8 “You shall not steal.” Exodus 20:15
9 “You shall not bear false witness.” Romans 13:9 9 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.” Exodus 20:16
10 “You shall not covet!” Romans 7:7 10 “You shall not covet your neighbour's house. You shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that your neighbour has.” Exodus 20:17
13 Is the law of God and the law of Moses the same?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q13 Moses Tablets Staff

Answer: No, it is not the same law. Study the following notes and the comparison carefully.

Remark The Law of Moses was the temporary ceremonial law of the Old Testament. It governed the priestly service, sacrifices, rituals, food and drink offerings, etc., and everything that foreshadowed the cross. This law was added “until the seed should come,” and this seed was Christ (Galatians 3:16.19). The services in the Law of Moses pointed to the future, to the sacrifice of Jesus. When he died, this law had come to an end, whereas the Ten Commandments (God's law) “will endure forever and ever.” Psalms 111:8 The fact that there are two laws is clearly expressed in Daniel 9:10.11.

Special note Please note that the law of God at least already existed when sin came into the world. The Bible says: “Where the law is not, there is no transgression (sin).” Romans 4:15 It follows that God's Ten Commandment law existed from the beginning. People transgressed this law. Because of sin (the transgression of God's law), the law of Moses was given (added - Galatians 3:16.19) until Christ would come and die. It is about two different laws: The law of God and the law of Moses.

LAW MOSE LAW OF GOD
“Called ”the law of Moses" (Luke 2:22) “Called ”the law of the LORD" (Isaiah 5:24)
Called “law ... given in commandments” (Ephesians 2:15) Called “the royal law” (James 2:8)
Written by Moses in a book (2 Chronicles 35:12) Written by God on stone (Exodus 31:18 32:16)
Placed at the side of the Ark of the Covenant (Deuteronomy 31:26) Placed in the ark of the covenant (Exodus 40:20).
Met his end on the cross (Ephesians 2:15) Will endure forever and ever (Luke 16:17)
Added for the sake of sin (Galatians 3:19) Reveals sin (Romans 7:7 3:20)
Is against us (Colossians 2:14) Not difficult (1 John 5:3)
Judge no one (Colossians 2:14-16) Judge all men (James 2:10-12)
Carnal (Hebrews 7:16) Spiritual (Romans 7:14)
Made nothing perfect (Hebrews 7:19) Perfect (Psalms 19:7)
14 What feelings does the devil have towards those who live their lives according to God's Ten Commandments?

Ba Isg Sg6 Q14 Bibleman Devil“And the dragon (the devil) was wroth with the woman (the true church), and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17 “Here is the steadfast endurance of the saints, here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12.

Answer: The devil hates people who uphold God's law because it is the pattern for a righteous life. And if you decide to follow the pattern set out in God's law, you will immediately feel the devil's unbridled wrath. It is not surprising that the devil hates all those who uphold God's law and oppose them. But it is shocking and astonishing to hear religious leaders say that the Ten Commandments are no longer binding while upholding human traditions. It is therefore not surprising that Jesus says: “And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” “But in vain do they worship me, because they teach doctrines which are the commandments of men.” Matthew 15:3.9 And David said, “It is time for the LORD to act; they have broken your law!” Psalms 119:126 Christians need to wake up and restore God's law to its rightful, exalted place. It is presumptuous of this generation to believe that they can transgress the law of the living God with impunity.

Questions to think about

1. doesn't the Bible say that the law was (or is) flawed?

No. The Bible says that people are flawed because he “reproves them”. Hebrews 8:8 And in Romans 8:3, the Bible says that the law was “weakened by the flesh.” It's always the same story. The law is perfect, but people are flawed or weak. That is why God wanted his Son to dwell in the hearts of his people “so that the righteousness required by the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:4

2 Galatians 3:13 says that we are redeemed from the curse of the law. How is this to be understood?

The curse of the law is death. (Romans 6:23) Christ “tasted death for everyone”. Hebrews 2:9 In doing so, he freed everyone from the curse of the law (death) and brought eternal life in its place.

3 Is it not said in Colossians 2:14-17 and Ephesians 2:15 that God's law came to an end on the cross?

No, because these two passages refer to the law of certain regulations, or the law of Moses, the ceremonial law, which regulated the sacrificial service and the priestly service. All ceremonies and rituals foreshadowed the cross and, according to God's intention, came to an end at Jesus“ death. The law of Moses was added until ”the seed would come“, and this ”seed is Christ". Galatians 3:19.16 This cannot be God's law, because Paul called it holy, right and good many years after the cross (Romans 7:7, 12).

4 The Bible says: ‚Love is the fulfilment of the law‘. Romans 13:10 In Matthew 22:37-40, the Bible also commands us to love God and our neighbour and concludes with the words: ‚In these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets‘. Do these two commandments replace the Ten Commandments?

No, the Ten Commandments are connected to these two commandments like our 10 fingers are connected to our two hands. They cannot be separated from each other. Love for God makes keeping the first four commandments (which relate to God) a joy, and love for our neighbour makes keeping the remaining six commandments (which relate to our neighbour) a joy as well. Love fulfils the law by freeing us from pressure and making the keeping of the commandments a joy (Psalms 40:9). If we really love a person, then we fulfil their requests joyfully. Jesus said: “If you love me, keep my commandments”. John 14:15 It is impossible to love the Lord and not keep his commandments, for the Bible says: “This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” 1 John 5:3 “He who says, »I have come to know him,« and yet does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” 1 John 2:4

5 Does not 2 Corinthians 3:7 say that the law written in stone has been ‚done away‘?

No. This passage says that the “glory” of the ministry of the law of Moses would cease, but not the law. Read the whole section of 2 Corinthians 3:3-9 again carefully. It's not about the issue of instituting or doing away with the law, but much more about the repositioning of the law from “tables of stone” to “tables of the heart”. Under Moses, the law was engraved on stones. And under the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the law is written in the heart through Christ. (Hebrews 8:10) A school regulation only becomes effective when it has reached the heart of the student. The ministry of Christ becomes effective by planting the law in the heart of the Christian. Then keeping the commandments becomes a joy and makes life joyful because the Christian has true love for God and man.

6 Romans 10:4 says: ‚Christ is the end of the law‘. So the law has ended, hasn't it?

In this verse “end” means “purpose” or “goal”, just as in James 5:11. The meaning is clear: the goal, the purpose of the law is to lead people to Christ, where they will find righteousness.

7 Why do so many people say that the requirements of God's law are no longer binding?

“For the desire of the flesh is death, but the desire of the Spirit is life and peace, because the desire of the flesh is enmity against God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed God's Spirit dwells in you; but if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.” Romans 8:7-9

8. were believers at the time of the Old Testament redeemed by the law?

No one has ever been saved by the law. All saved people at all times have been saved by grace. This is...the grace that was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages of ages” 2 Timothy 1:9 The law only points out sin. Christ alone can redeem. Noah “found grace” (Genesis 33:17); the Israelites in the wilderness found grace (Jeremiah 31:2); Abel, Enoch, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and many other Old Testament people were saved “by faith” according to Hebrews 11. They were saved by looking forward to the cross; and we are saved by looking back to it. The law is necessary to show us the “dirt” in our lives as in a mirror. Without the law, people are sinners without realising this fact. Nevertheless, the law has no saving power. It can only make people aware of sin. Jesus, he alone, can save a person from sin. This has always been the case, even in the time of the Old Testament. (Acts 4:10, 12; 2 Timothy 1:9)

9 Why should we worry about the law? Isn't conscience a sure guide?

No! And no again! The Bible speaks of an evil conscience, a defiled conscience and a conscience that has fallen asleep and cannot be relied upon. “Many a way seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” Proverbs 14:12 God says: “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool ...” Proverbs 28:26
